Hushai (Cushi)

(quick, swift)—the name or form attached to several persons: (1) Hushai the Archite, David’s friend (2 Sam. 15:32-37; 16-18; 1 Chron. 27:33). During Absalom’s revolt David sent him back to Jerusalem to frustrate Ahithophel’s counsel and to report through the priests Zadok and Abiathar. Hushai carried out the plan and helped save David and his followers. (2) Cushi, an ancestor of Jehudi, who was sent in King Jehoiakim’s reign to bring Baruch’s scroll of Jeremiah’s prophecies to the officials (Jer. 36:14). (3) Cushi, father of the prophet Zephaniah (Zeph. 1:1).
