—(1) language as speech or dialect. Genesis says, “The whole earth had one language and the same words” before the building of Babel and the confusion of human speech (Gen. 11:1, 6-9). Traditions of a primordial common language also appeared among nonbiblical peoples, though their mythic forms do not establish the language spoken by the earliest humans.
