Hazor

(settlement, fortress) (Josh. 11:1) — a city of the tribe of Naphtali, capital of the Canaanites, in which Jabin reigned at the time of the conquest of the land of Canaan, and which was taken and burned by Joshua (Josh. 11:1–13). Despite this, the city was rebuilt and afterward came under the rule of another king, also named Jabin, whose army was defeated by Barak (Judg. 4:2–17). Fortified by Solomon (1 Kings 9:15), at the invasion of the country by Tiglath-pileser, king of Assyria, it fell into the hands of this conqueror (1 Kings [rather, 2 Kings] 15:29), and its inhabitants were carried captive to Assyria.
The final destruction of the city was foretold by the prophet Jeremiah in the following words: “And Hazor shall be a dwelling for dragons, and a desolation for ever: there shall no man abide there, nor any son of man dwell in it” (Jer. 49:33). It is clear from the context of the prophecy, however, that the Hazor referred to was located in Arabia and had special importance. No trace remains of the city, though some suppose it to be the present-day Petra.
