Merom Maron

(high place) (Josh 11:5, 7) — a marshy lake in the northern part of Judea, through which the Jordan flows. At present it is called El-Huleh, as is the valley in which it lies. It received its name from its elevated position, since it actually stands 600 or 800 feet higher than the Sea of Tiberias, and is regarded by many as the true source of the Jordan. Most of its bed dries up in summer and becomes overgrown with grass and reeds, in which wild animals, buffalo, wild boar, snakes, and others find shelter.
In the spring floods the lake spreads out to six miles in length and three and a half miles in breadth. At that time a great quantity of fish is caught in it. It is called the waters of Merom, or the high waters, on the ground that it lies, by its position, considerably higher than the other lakes of Judea. This lake is not mentioned in the New Testament.
