(pouring forth) (Gen 32:22-24) - a brook or stream beyond the Jordan, flowing from east to north of Gilead and emptying into the Jordan. It is now called Wadi Zerka. Here the patriarch Jacob engaged in his mysterious wrestling with God. Deuteronomy calls it the border of the children of Ammon (Deut 3:16), though in Moses' time it was already the boundary of the territory of Sihon, king of the Amorites (Josh 12:2). In some parts of its course the stream ordinarily dries up at a certain season, but its lower part never dries up even in summer. Dense thickets of reeds and oleanders, together with oak groves along its banks, give the Jabbok a distinctive beauty.
