Jude the Apostle
Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia
(Luke 6:16; John 14:22; Jude 1:1), otherwise called Thaddaeus, one of the Lord's brothers according to the flesh and brother of the holy apostle James the Less. Jude's name occurs only once in the Gospel narrative, when during the Lord's final discourse he asked, 'Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world?' (John 14:22). Scripture says very little else about him. According to tradition, he first preached in Judea, Galilee, Samaria, and Idumea, then in Arabia, Syria, and Mesopotamia, and finally in Persia and Armenia. He died a martyr, first being hung upon a tree and then pierced with arrows. His commemorations are June 19 and 30.
