Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(hill, elevation) (Josh 10:3) - a Canaanite city in the Shephelah. Its king was one of the five kings who warred against Gibeon and besieged it, but Joshua defeated them at Beth-horon. Israel then captured Lachish, and in the division of the Promised Land it fell to Judah (Josh 15:39). Rehoboam rebuilt and fortified it (2 Chr 11:9). Amaziah fled there after a conspiracy against him and was killed by the conspirators (2 Chr 25:27). Micah rebuked the corruption and idolatry of its inhabitants (Mic 1:13).
