—among the Hebrews were of two kinds: those for sacred use and those for the home. The first is represented by the golden seven-branched lampstand in the sanctuary (Exod. 25:31–37), beaten from pure gold, with a central stem and six branches, three on each side. Its seven lamps were to burn continually (Exod. 27:20). Solomon’s Temple had ten golden lampstands ornamented with flowers, five on the south and five on the north (1 Kings 7:49). They were carried to Babylon when the Chaldeans conquered Judah and Jerusalem (Jer. 52:19).
