Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(Gen. 25:34; 2 Sam. 17:28; 23:11; Ezek. 4:9)—a pulse widely grown in the biblical world. Lentils were cooked as stew, ground into flour, and mixed into bread. Esau sold his birthright to Jacob for bread and red lentil stew (Gen. 25:30, 34). Lentils were also supplied to David at Mahanaim during his flight from Absalom.
