Lydda, or Lod

(contention) (1 Chr 8:12; 9:32) - a city near Joppa, on the road from Jerusalem to Joppa, built or restored by descendants of Benjamin (1 Chr 8:12). Seven hundred twenty-five people from Lydda, Hadid, and Ono returned from Babylonian captivity (Ezra 2:33) and repopulated Lod (Neh 11:35). Under Syrian rule it first belonged to Samaria, but Demetrius Soter afterward granted it to Judea under Jonathan (1 Macc 11:34). The Roman commander Cestius burned it (Josephus, Wars 2.19.1), but it was soon rebuilt and became the center of a celebrated Jewish school.
