Shur
Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia
(wall; Gen. 16:7; Exod. 15:22)—a wilderness and frontier region east of Egypt and northwest of the Sinai Peninsula. Hagar encountered the angel of the LORD by the spring on the way to Shur; Israel entered the wilderness of Shur after crossing the sea; and David’s raids reached toward it (1 Sam. 27:8). The name may reflect Egypt’s fortified eastern boundary rather than a single city.
