Right Hand

(Ps. 21:8)—a frequent symbol of power, honor, skill, and favor. God’s saving might is attributed to his right hand (Exod. 15:6), and to stand or sit at the right hand is to occupy a place of distinction (1 Kings 2:19; Ps. 110:1). The exalted Christ at God’s right hand possesses incomparable glory and authority. Raising the hand could accompany an oath (Gen. 14:22), and giving the right hand signified fellowship (Gal. 2:9). Biblical directions may be described from an eastward orientation, making the right hand south and the left north. Such expressions are figurative and do not imply that the incorporeal God has bodily limitations.
