Paphos

(Acts 13:6)—a well-known city in western Cyprus, called Baffa in the source’s day. There Bar-jesus, or Elymas the sorcerer, was struck blind, and there Sergius Paulus was converted to Christianity by the Apostle Paul. Paphos was especially famous for the worship of the goddess Venus, whose renowned temple stood nearby. The church founded there continued to flourish for a considerable time. Several remains of ancient churches and other buildings survived in the city.
