Patara
Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia
(Acts 21:1)—a city on the coast of Lycia in Asia Minor, once famous for a temple and oracle of Apollo. Its ruins were repeatedly visited and described by modern travelers. The city retained its ancient name into the source’s day and preserved many traces of its former greatness, including a theater, a small temple, city walls, and several tombs with Latin and Greek inscriptions. Classical references to Patara are numerous. Ptolemy Philadelphus, who adorned the city, named it Arsinoe in honor of his wife Arsinoe.
