Patmos
Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia
(Rev. 1:9)—a small rocky island lying southwest of Samos, not far from it. According to Pliny, it was thirty miles in circumference. The English scholar Bochart supposed that the island’s name was Semitic in origin and meant terebinth tree. Patmos is mentioned in Revelation 1:9: “I John, who also am your brother, and companion in tribulation, and in the kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was in the isle that is called Patmos, for the word of God, and for the testimony of Jesus Christ.”
