(Ezra 9:8)—a figure of secure continuance: God had given the returned exiles “a peg in his holy place,” allowing them to take root again after exile. In ancient construction a substantial wooden or metal peg could be fixed firmly into a wall as it was built and support garments, vessels, or other objects. This background illuminates the image of reliable support in Isaiah 22:23-25 and the ruler from Judah described as a tent peg in Zechariah 10:4.
