Pillar of Cloud and Fire
Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia
(Exod. 13:21–22)—the visible sign by which the LORD led Israel from Egypt: a pillar of cloud by day and of fire by night. At the Red Sea it moved behind the camp, bringing darkness to the Egyptians and light to Israel, and from it the LORD troubled Pharaoh’s army (Exod. 14:19–24). The cloud rested upon the Tabernacle; when it lifted, Israel journeyed, and when it remained, the camp stayed in place (Num. 9:15–23).
