(Acts 28:7)—the chief man of Melita, or Malta, perhaps serving as legate of the Sicilian praetor, to whose province Malta belonged. During Paul’s stay on the island, the apostle healed Publius’s father, who suffered from fever and dysentery. According to Western tradition, Publius later became bishop of Malta.
