(chief cupbearer) (2 Kings 18:17; 19:4–13)—the official title of one of Sennacherib’s Assyrian commanders, whom the king sent with messages to Hezekiah and the people of Jerusalem. He was accompanied by two other officers, likewise identified by their official titles: Rabsaris, the chief of the eunuchs, and Tartan, whose title the source leaves unexplained. Scripture relates that the Assyrian army under these commanders was struck by an angel in a single night, and its survivors returned to their own land in shame (2 Kings 18:17–37; 19:35–36).
