Rahab
Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia
(broad or spacious, hence freedom) (Josh. 2:1, 3; 6:17; Matt. 1:5; Jas. 2:25; Heb. 11:31)—a woman of Jericho ordinarily called Rahab the harlot. Some have attempted to soften the term by calling her an innkeeper. Rahab had heard of the Israelites, of God’s many mercies toward them, of their victories over the Amorite kings Sihon and Og, and that Jericho itself was to become Israel’s possession (Josh. 2:8–11).
