Shittim
Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia
—the name of two places. (1) (Joel 3:18) the Valley of Shittim. The encyclopedia places it in Moab nearly opposite Jericho, but the prophetic expression may simply mean a valley known for its many shittah trees, or acacias, and may be a poetic name for barren, uncultivated ground transformed by the LORD’s blessing. (2) (Num. 25:1; Josh. 2:1; 3:1; Mic. 6:5) a place on the plains of Moab where Israel camped for a long time before crossing the Jordan, north of the Dead Sea and east of the lower Jordan opposite Jericho. It was probably Abel-shittim. See Abel-shittim.
