Rimmon

(pomegranate tree or fruit)—the name of two places and an idol: (1) (Josh. 19:13; 1 Chron. 6:77) a Levitical city of Zebulun, apparently called Dimnah in Joshua 21:35, identified by the source with Rummaneh north of Nazareth; (2) (Judg. 20:45 and elsewhere) the Rock of Rimmon in Benjamin near Geba, where six hundred Benjaminites hid for four months, with a village of the same name on a hill between Bethel and the Jordan; and (3) (2 Kings 5:18) a Syrian deity especially honored in Damascus. Some connected the name with Hadad-rimmon, a god compared with the Greek Adonis and associated with the pomegranate.
