(interpreted by some as flame or burning, and by others as exalted or noble)—one of the nine orders of the heavenly hierarchy, nearest to God, named in Isaiah’s vision (Isa. 6:2, 6). They stand around the LORD’s throne in human form, each with six wings: with two they cover their faces as unworthy to gaze upon the LORD of hosts, with two they cover their feet, and with two they fly ceaselessly to accomplish their King’s heavenly commands. They cry without end, “Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory,” and at their voice the foundations shake and the house is filled with smoke.
