Terebinth
Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia
(Hos. 4:13; Isa. 6:13; Sir. 24:16)—a spreading tree of the pistachio family, common in the eastern Mediterranean and valued for shade and resin. Older translations and the source sometimes confuse the terebinth with the oak, but the terms are not identical and the exact species varies by passage. Scripture associates such trees with prominent places, shade, and at times illicit worship. Isaiah uses the enduring stump of an oak or terebinth as an image of the holy seed that remains after judgment (Isa. 6:13).
