Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia
(Matt. 10:3; Mark 3:18; Luke 6:15; John 11:16; 14:5; 20:24; 21:2; Acts 1:13)—one of the Twelve Apostles. The Aramaic name Thomas and the Greek Didymus both mean “twin.” John’s Gospel preserves several sayings that reveal his direct and resolute character. When Jesus set out for Judea after Lazarus’s death, Thomas said, “Let us also go, that we may die with him” (John 11:16). At the Last Supper he asked, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” and received Christ’s answer, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life” (John 14:5-6).
