Shalmaneser

(2 Kings 17:3–5; 18:9)—king of Assyria, whom the source represents as deposed by Sargon after a reign of five years. Several earlier Assyrian kings also bore the name. He invaded Palestine twice, in the first and last years of his reign. On the first occasion Hoshea king of Israel submitted and agreed to annual tribute; in the fifth year Shalmaneser besieged Samaria. The source says Sargon displaced him during the siege and founded a new dynasty. The righteous Israelite Tobit lived in this king’s days. The source also reports that the royal name appears on many Assyrian monuments.
