(meaning uncertain) (Judg. 3:31)—one of Israel’s judges, son of Anath. He displayed extraordinary courage by striking down six hundred Philistines with an oxgoad. The source links his period with the dangerous conditions recalled in the song of Deborah and Barak: “The highways were unoccupied, and the travellers walked through byways” (Judg. 5:6). If Shamgar was not contemporary with Deborah and Barak, the source concludes that he immediately preceded them.
