Shemaiah

(whom God hears)—the name of four persons: (1) (1 Kings 12:22–24; 2 Chron. 11:2–4) the prophet who dissuaded Rehoboam and Judah from attempting to subdue the northern kingdom and later moved the people to repentance during Shishak’s invasion, promising release from complete destruction. (2) (2 Esd. 1:9) a leader of the Levites under Josiah who gave five thousand sheep and seven hundred oxen for the Passover sacrifice; 2 Chronicles 35:9 gives the corresponding name Shemaiah. (3) (2 Esd. 8:39) a leader among the sons of Adonikam who returned from Babylon with Ezra; Ezra 8:13 gives Shemaiah. (4) (2 Esd. 9:21) a priest who had married a foreign wife; Ezra 10:21 gives Shemaiah. For other persons, see Shemaiah.
