The tribe of Benjamin

(1 Sam. 9:25 [as given]; Judg. 5:14, and elsewhere) — had its inheritance in the Promised Land, between the tribes of Judah and Ephraim. When the ten tribes of Israel fell away, the tribe of Benjamin remained faithful to Judah, and thereafter formed part of the kingdom of Judah (1 Kings 12:17–23), which, as is known, consisted of two tribes: Judah and Benjamin. The prophecies concerning the fate of the tribe of Benjamin are given in the Book of Genesis (49:27) and in the Book of Deuteronomy (33:12).
The inheritance of the tribe of Benjamin was not large, but the soil in it was fertile and the climate healthful. The details of the military alliance and the campaign of the sons of Israel against this tribe, accompanied by a bloody war that nearly annihilated it, are related in the Book of Judges (20). Some warriors of the tribe of Benjamin were famed for their skill in slinging stones with the left hand (left-handed men). Here it may also be mentioned that Saul, the first king of the Hebrews, was of the tribe of Benjamin, and that within its bounds lay the capital city of Judea, Jerusalem. St. Paul the Apostle likewise was of the tribe of Benjamin (Phil. 3:5).
