Sidon

(fishing)—the name of a person and a place. (1) (Gen. 10:15; 1 Chron. 1:13) the firstborn of Canaan son of Ham and, according to the source, ancestor of the Sidonians. (2) (Gen. 10:19; 49:13; Matt. 11:21; Acts 27:3 and elsewhere) the most ancient, wealthy, and famous city of Phoenicia, perhaps founded by the preceding Sidon and therefore called Great Sidon (Josh. 11:8). It stood at the northwestern corner of Canaan, twenty or thirty English miles north of Tyre. It was allotted to Asher, but the native inhabitants were never expelled and continued to trouble Israel. Ezekiel calls them a pricking brier and grieving thorn to Israel (Ezek. 28:24). Jacob’s prophecy shows that Sidon was known before Moses (Gen. 49:13).
