Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(Judg. 20:16; 1 Sam. 17:40)—a hand-held weapon and shepherd’s implement used to throw small stones. Known from the earliest times, it was used by shepherds, as it still was in the East in the source’s day, to drive beasts away from their flocks. With this same weapon God helped David strike Goliath (1 Sam. 17:49).
