(Gen. 13:7)—one of the peoples repeatedly named among the inhabitants of Canaan. They lived in several parts of the land, including hill country near Shechem and territory later associated with Ephraim and Judah (Gen. 34:30; Josh. 17:15; Judg. 1:4–5). Their name may be related to inhabitants of unwalled villages, but their precise ethnic origin and later history are obscure. They resisted Israel’s settlement and were later placed under forced labor by Solomon together with other surviving Canaanite groups (Josh. 9:1; 11:3; 1 Kings 9:20–21).
