Swan

Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

- the name of this noble and peaceful ruler of the lakes occurs twice in Scripture (Lev 11:18; Deut 14:16), where the traditional rendering places it among unclean birds. Scripture says nothing about the dying swan's final song, so beloved by ancient Greek poets; the source takes this as evidence that biblical natural history does not support superstition or popular error. Swans are found on the Jordan and other rivers and lakes of Syria, especially the Sea of Galilee.
