Sweet Cane (Aromatic Calamus)

(Exod. 30:23; Ezek. 27:19)—an aromatic plant used in the sacred anointing oil and traded with Tyre. The Hebrew qeneh bosem means fragrant cane or reed, but the precise botanical species remains debated. Ancient interpreters associated the finest material with Arabia or lands farther east; confident identification with a single modern European plant is unwarranted.
