Syrophoenician Woman

Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(Mark 7:26; compare Matt. 15:22)—a Gentile woman from the Phoenician part of Syria. Mark calls her a Greek, a Syrophoenician by birth, which may refer to her language and regional origin; Matthew calls her a Canaanite woman, indicating descent from the ancient Canaanite population. She was not wholly unacquainted with Jewish faith, and her great faith in Christ received His mercy when He delivered her daughter from an unclean spirit.
