Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

Taanach

(“sandy ground”) (Josh. 12:21)—a Canaanite royal city near Megiddo on the edge of the Jezreel Valley. Israel conquered its king; the town fell within Manasseh’s territory and was assigned to the Levites (Josh. 17:11; 21:25). Barak and Deborah’s victory over Sisera is celebrated as occurring “at Taanach, by the waters of Megiddo” (Judg. 5:19). Under Solomon it belonged to the district governed by Baana son of Ahilud (1 Kings 4:12). It is identified with Tell Ta‘annek southeast of Megiddo.
