The fork

(Exod. 27:3; 1 Sam. 2:13, 14). The ancient Israelites used three-pronged forks for taking pieces of meat out of the pot or kettle, for turning meat on a griddle, and the like. Among the vessels of the altar of sacrifice among the Hebrews, bronze forks were used for this purpose (Exod. 27:3). Besides forks, the Bible also mentions pitchforks [vily], used in field labor (1 Sam. 13:21). Table forks, as at present among the peoples of the East, were entirely unknown to the ancient Hebrews, since in partaking of food they used their fingers directly.
