(asked for; prayed for)—the name of four persons in the Old Testament. (1) (Gen. 36:37–38) an Edomite king from Rehoboth by the River, probably the Euphrates. (2) (Gen. 46:10) a son of Simeon, son of the patriarch Jacob, by a Canaanite woman; from him descended the clan of the Shaulites. (3) (1 Chron. 6:24) an ancestor of the Prophet Samuel. (4) (1 Sam. 9:2) the first king of Israel, son of Kish of Benjamin. Kish was prominent among the Israelites, and Saul was distinguished by his beauty and height: from his shoulders upward he was taller than any of the people.
