Zamzummim Zochommin

(a word of very obscure meaning; perhaps: people undertaking counsel, and hence — a noisy, tumultuous people) (Deut. 2:20). A people under this name is mentioned only in the cited passage. It appears they were one and the same as the Rephaim, and dwelt in the land afterward occupied by the Ammonites, who gave it the name Zamzummim. This people is sometimes confused with the Zuzim (Gen. 14:5), but such an identification seems to be incorrect. The Zamzummim were a strong and numerous people, occupying, until their destruction by the Ammonites, the eastern part of the land from the river Jordan and the Dead Sea.
