Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia
(branch, sprout) (Ezra 2:8; Neh. 7:13) — a person whose descendants, 945 in number, returned from Babylon to Jerusalem under Zerubbabel. In the book of Nehemiah the number of those who returned is given as almost a hundred fewer. Some of the family of Zattu, by Ezra’s order, had to dissolve marriages they had contracted with foreign wives during the captivity (Ezra 10:27).
