Zarethan

Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

—(1) a place near Adam on the Jordan. When Israel crossed opposite Jericho, the waters coming from above stood in a heap far away at Adam, beside Zarethan, while the people crossed on dry ground (Josh. 3:16). Second Chronicles 4:17 gives the related form Zeredah. (2) A place in Manasseh near Beth-shean below Jezreel (1 Kings 4:12). The source distinguishes a southern Ephraimite Zarethan/Zeredah from a northern Manassite Zarethan/Zererah; modern identifications remain debated.
