Hachilah

(darkness) (1 Sam. 23:19; 26:1) — the name of a hill to the south of Jeshimon and near the wilderness of Ziph. On this hill David twice hid from the pursuit of Saul (23:19–28; 26:1–25). Both times Saul, informed by the Ziphites of David’s whereabouts, attempted to seize him, but in vain. The first time, Saul was prevented from capturing David by an attack of the Philistines, and the second time, David himself, having crept by night with Abishai into Saul’s camp, took from there a jug of water and a spear and departed unnoticed (26:12). It is thought that Hachilah was located in the southern part of the tribe of Judah.
