(guardian of the immortals) (Gen. 14:1) — king of Shinar, that is, of Babylonia, who, allying himself with three other kings, made war against Sodom and the other cities lying in the plain of Siddim, where the Dead Sea now is. They plundered these cities and took their inhabitants captive. In the course of one such raid they took captive Lot, Abraham’s nephew, among the prisoners (Gen. 14:12).
