Baal, or Bel

(lord, master) (1 Kings 18:19 [as given]; Isa. 46:1; Jer. 9:14) — the name of a former pagan deity, worshiped as a god in Phoenicia and Syria, and originally the name of a deity under which some of the ancient eastern peoples worshiped the sun. The Phoenicians called the sun Baal-shamem, which means “Lord of the heavens.”
