Dathan

Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(spring) (Num. 16:1–26; Deut. 11:6; Ps. 106 [105]:17) — a Reubenite, son of Eliab, who together with his brother Abiram, the Levites Korah, On, and others, formed a conspiracy against Moses and Aaron, and was punished for it by God with a terrible death. The household of Korah, with the exception of his sons, who probably repented (26:11), and Dathan and Abiram with their followers, were swallowed alive by the earth, while two hundred and fifty men who took part in the rebellion were consumed by fire from heaven. See Korah.
