Burning bush

(Exod 3:2, 4; Deut 33:16) - the thorn bush near Horeb that burned without being consumed and in which the LORD appeared to Moses, calling him to deliver Israel from Egyptian bondage. In patristic teaching and church hymnography, the bush that burned yet remained unconsumed especially prefigured the Mother of God, the Virgin Theotokos, who remained incorrupt in the incarnation and birth of the Son of God. Most biblical commentators cited by the source considered the bush a species of mimosa or acacia common in desert regions. Monks of St. Catherine's Monastery at Sinai pointed out the traditional bush east of the great monastery church.
