(Jer. 46:25; Ezek. 30:14-16; Nah. 3:8)—the great city of Upper Egypt on both banks of the Nile, centered in the region of modern Luxor and Karnak. Egyptian Waset was called No or No-amon in the Bible because of its association with the god Amun. Greek tradition celebrated Thebes as “hundred-gated,” a poetic expression of its scale and military resources.
