Elisabeth

(God is her oath) — this name occurs in the Old Testament only once (Exod. 6:23), namely as the name of the wife of the high priest Aaron, brother of Moses. She was the daughter of Amminadab, sister of Nahshon, of the tribe of Judah (Num. 2:3). In the New Testament this name belongs to the wife of the priest Zechariah, of the line of Aaron (Luke 1:5), mother of John the Baptist, who was born to her in her old age, and a kinswoman of the Most Holy Virgin Mary the Mother of God. At the visit of the Most Holy Virgin Mary to the house of Zechariah, Elisabeth, inspired from on high, was the first to greet her as “blessed among women” and the “Mother of my Lord” (Luke 1:42, 43).
