—the hairs bordering the eyelids. Proverbs warns a young man not to be captured by an adulterous woman’s eyelashes, an image of seductive glances (Prov. 6:25). Job poetically calls the first rays of dawn “the eyelids of the morning,” and the fire-breathing Leviathan’s eyes are compared to them (Job 3:9; 41:18). Ancient women could darken the eye area with cosmetic pigment, as Jezebel did before appearing at the window (2 Kings 9:30; compare Jer. 4:30; Ezek. 23:40). Scripture does not specify a single universal cosmetic mixture.
