(2 Kings 25:27) — king of Babylon, evidently son and successor of Nebuchadnezzar. His reign began upon his father’s death and lasted only two years. During this time he showed favor to Jehoiachin, king of Judah, releasing him from the prison in which he had languished 37 years, treating him kindly, speaking with him graciously, and making him a permanent guest at his royal table. About 559 B.C. he was killed by Neriglissar, a Babylonian nobleman married to his sister, who thereby seized the Babylonian crown. Ancient writers say little of this king, and speak unfavorably of his character and manner of life (Berossus).
